Uxbridge, 20 June 2011 – The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has won the Green IT Awards’ Public Sector Project of the Year for 2011. The award recognised DWP’s sustainable print project, delivered in partnership with Xerox, which has cut the amount of electricity the department uses.

In March 2010, DWP began a joint sustainable print service project with Xerox to cut printing costs and reduce energy use through a managed print service. With Xerox’s help the Department replaced more than 30,000 legacy single-function printers with fewer than 8,200 Xerox multi-function devices, which, where necessary, are capable of printing, copying, faxing and scanning and are Energy Star-rated.

In addition to cutting electricity consumption by 63%, the new fleet gave DWP staff  capacity to have scanning facilities at every site in the Department if needed. Default double-sided printing also helped save paper and money. Calls to the help desk have nearly halved, and there has been a 90 percent reduction in the number of site visits by engineers to deal with faulty printers.

Julie Hesselgrove, director and general manager, Global Document Outsourcing, said:
"Part of this initiative has involved introducing a sustainable print service through which Xerox has streamlined the department’s print environment, provided cost-savings and met sustainability objectives, so  DWP can continue to focus on transforming its services for UK citizens.”

Now in its second year, the Green IT Awards are run by Green IT Magazine and aim to showcase and reward companies that have made a significant contribution to improving the IT industry’s environmental performance over the last 12 months.

Xerox has been a partner to theU.K.government and public sector for more than 35 years. In late 2010, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cabinet Office to deliver savings to HM Government as part of the Efficiency Reform Group’s deficit-reduction progamme. Xerox provides technology, document management and business process outsourcing to DWP as well as other public sector clients such as Worcester NHS Trust, Manchester City Council, Scottish Police Services Authority and Kirklees Council.

As the worldwide market leader in managed print services like the ones used in the DWP programme, Xerox applies the same tools and techniques used to save millions for corporate customers to help clients in the public sector. Xerox was positioned by Gartner, Inc., in the Leaders Quadrant in the “Magic Quadrant for Managed Print Services Worldwide[1] for 2010 and was recognised as a leader in IDC’s 2010 MPS MarketScape report[2]
