Xerox is first to target mid-production colour market with latest colour digital press

UXBRIDGE -- Xerox today launched the 50 page-per-minute DocuColor® 5000 Digital Press, the industry's first digital colour press to address the needs of print operations that have mid-range monthly print volumes and that require more advanced printing features. The digital printing press, one of several new offerings designed to further bolster Xerox's industry-leading colour printing portfolio, was unveiled at the AIIM/On Demand print industry trade show in Philadelphia earlier this month. "The productivity and price of the new DocuColor 5000 opens up new opportunities in the mid-production segment and extends Xerox's leadership," said Jim Hamilton, director of InfoTrends' On Demand Printing & Publishing Consulting Service. "The DocuColor 5000 offers the image resolution, broad substrate support and robustness of the higher-end DocuColor products at a price point that will make it attractive to a wide range of production sites." The DocuColor 5000 is designed for print providers that average between 30,000 and 150,000 impressions per month. It features 2400 x 2400 dpi print resolution and state-of-the-art laser technology. The DocuColor 5000's 32-beam laser - compared to a typical 2-beam laser - allows the press to scan more data faster and at a higher resolution. It also offers tighter registration and a wider choice of colour management capabilities than light-production digital colour systems now on the market. Designed to produce marketing brochures, posters, customised direct-mail pieces and more, the digital press maintains its speed when printing on heavyweight, oversized and coated paper. "The DocuColor 5000 gives customers what they need to enter the digital colour market or grow their current digital colour business right here, right now," said Anoush Gordon, Director and General Manager, Xerox Production Group. "Xerox's 10 years of experience developing industry-leading digital colour printing systems has resulted in an unparalleled pr

London borough of Islington partners with Xerox Global Services for ambitious digital archiving project

UXBRIDGE -- Underlining its position as a public sector "technology beacon", London Borough of Islington is embarking on an ambitious digital archiving project aimed at improving efficiency, reducing response times and freeing valuable office space. The project follows the successful introduction of the first phase of the council's Xerox DocuShare installation, which is managed by its long-standing document outsourcing partner Xerox Global Services. The council, which is widely acknowledged as being one of the most technologically advanced in the country, is also set to become one of the UK's largest users of DocuShare, Xerox's secure web-based content management software, when the substantial document conversion project is rolled out across ten departments. The project is the principal component of London Borough of Islington's plan to reduce its reliance on hard copy documents wherever possible, which is part of its wider strategy to support sustainability, improve services and reduce costs. It is hoped that eventually the vast majority of documents stored by the council will be converted into searchable, digital documents. The head of London Borough of Islington's information communication and technology department, Technology Solutions Group (TSG), John Lowin, said: "London Borough of Islington is committed to sustainability, which is why we have a number of projects that maximise value from existing resources, improve services to those we serve, as well as creating a dynamic and clutter-free environment for those working here. We estimate that it costs at least £6,000 per annum to maintain a single desk space in Islington, so archiving bulky hard-copy documents on-site is extremely expensive. By removing unnecessary document storage, and introducing hot-desking and home working, we've doubled the number of people working at TSG and increased the amount of space that each person has." "We encourage staff to scan documents on our new Xerox WorkCentre 255

Xerox Launches Two New Versions Of Docushare Content Management Software

UXBRIDGE -- Xerox today unveiled DocuShare® CPX and DocuShare 5.0, two new enterprise content management (ECM) software products built on a single technology platform. Businesses can use one or both applications to handle their content and document management needs, such as financial record keeping or disclosure-related government regulations. Targeted at large enterprises and public sector organisations, DocuShare CPX makes it easy for people to share content, collaborate, and automate critical work processes such as processing mortgage loan applications or routing CVs through a human resources department. In addition, DocuShare CPX supports web conferencing and social computing features such as blogs and wikis that can be easily managed and stored as legally-binding records for auditing later. "With our dual product strategy, Xerox is challenging the current ECM paradigm," said Nigel Whitmore, Xerox DocuShare UK Sales Manager. "We give customers the flexibility to mix and match both types of content management solutions on one easy-to-use platform." In addition to the core capabilities of DocuShare 5.0, DocuShare CPX features four new software components to improve productivity and streamline work processes: Content-centric Collaboration - Blogs and wikis within DocuShare CPX can be managed so approvals, permissions, and auditing are consistent with corporate content management policies. Web conferencing is also possible through a new partnership with WebEx Communications, the on-demand collaboration leader. For example, a Chief Financial Officer can bring together an organisation's finance team, even if they are geographically dispersed, by launching an online WebEx meeting within DocuShare CPX to discuss an upcoming earnings announcement and related financial documents, Content Process Automation - Managers can easily configure rules and set specific actions that will be performed on new or existing content. As a result, organisation

iGen3 customer Inc Direct becomes first company in Europe to invest in XMPie site licence

UXBRIDGE -- Since purchasing a second Xerox iGen3 at the end of last year following a period of tremendous growth, Inc Direct has further demonstrated its faith in variable one-to-one marketing by becoming the first company in Europe to invest in a site licence from XMPie, one of the leading providers of dynamic publishing software. This investment underlines the print, direct marketing and digital media company's position at the forefront of personalised direct mail in Europe. Over the past year, Inc Direct has developed its own bespoke personalisation technique using the powerful features of XMPie PersonalEffect software integrated into the Xerox FreeFlow workflow to produce personalised direct marketing collateral for companies including The Carphone Warehouse, ebookers.com, Siemens Financial Services and others. With the new XMPie licence, Inc Direct can now take advantage of the XMPie software time and time again, as well as receive regular upgrades and purchase additional add-ons. The licence offers unique features including enhanced picture personalisation, dynamic charting to create variable pie charts useful for financial and transactional applications, web-to-print opportunities for e-commerce and cross-media campaigns and access to XMPie's programme architecture, allowing companies to build their own bespoke web portals with variable data. "Our new XMPie site licence means that we now have the power and flexibility to speak to any customer and immediately deliver complex one-to-one direct marketing solutions, without using additional software," says Noel Warner, managing director at Inc Direct. Qualitech takes the digital route with the Xerox DocuColor 5252 Colour press

UXBRIDGE -- Stockport printer Qualitech Group has bought its very first digital press, the Xerox DocuColor 5252 Digital Colour machine, to move into the smaller run printing market and the flexibility to offer its customers a little "something extra". The investment in the DC5252, worth £150,000, allows Qualitech to print at 52 pages per minute at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, producing everything from full colour brochures, to video box covers and point of purchase signage. Steve Cleaver, managing director of Qualitech Group said: "We have a range of clients, from advertising agencies to end users and the mix of work they give us can be extraordinary. We chose the DC5252 as the overall package offered by Xerox was the most attractive, in terms of quality, customer service, back-up and support assistance. The digital press allows us to capture the smaller end of the market - those jobs that may ordinarily be too small to handle on a litho press - and also offer additional services to our existing client base especially on the variable data and personalisation side. "This is our first significant move into digital printing and after assessing a range of options we concluded that Xerox provided the best-fit technology for our needs. Not only did Xerox provide the best integrated workflow model to help us capture new business but also the market knowledge and tools to help us grow and profit from our digital print business." Qualitech was established in 1978, originally as a reprographics specialist and has prospered over the years by adapting to the pace of change in the marketplace and by investing in suitable technology. Now employing 80 staff, much of Qualitech's growth has been down to the company's focus on producing high-quality results and successfully responding to clients' requirements. The Xerox DocuColor 5252 is ideal for commercial printers, inplants and quick-print professionals and provides an economical printing solution through its sim

Image Data Group signs up for Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Presses at IPEX 06

UXBRIDGE -- Image Data Group has invested in one of the latest Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Presses at IPEX 06, with plans to purchase another four within the next 12 months and options on another six by the end of 2007, making it one of the largest digital printing operations in Europe. A long-time Xerox user, Image Data currently operates three Xerox Nuvera 120 production presses, one Xerox 6180, one Xerox 6135 and two Xerox 6060 presses. Its mono print volumes already exceed 5 million impressions a month and colour volumes are in excess of 3 million copies a month. The addition of the first of many Xerox iGen3 presses will enable Image Data to expand that capacity enormously. Greg Roach, Image Data's Group ICT director said: "Our new iGen3 machines mark the start of a major investment programme for Image Data Group as we expand into new premises and take the company into a new dimension of digital printing capability. "Our decision to invest in the Xerox iGen3 technology is based on our knowledge of Xerox's reputation for manufacturing resilient machines that can handle large workloads. Other important factors include the openness of the Xerox FreeFlow workflow system, the quality of engineering and diversity of its product range." The majority of Image Data Group's work is spread across three core markets; retail, corporate and public sector. It also produces large volumes of variable data marketing materials including ticket books and other highly personalised direct mail campaigns. Image Data Brighton, formerly XPS Ltd, is in the process of relocating to a new Automated Document Factory based in Brighton specifically designed to house five iGen3 engines, with the first of the iGen3s due to be installed at the new site in June of this year. A print logistics and distribution plant is also planned for later this year, at a new site in Howden on the M62 corridor, with extra digital capacity to act as a disaster recovery site for Image Data

Xerox and EFI extend their global support of tomorrow's digital print professionals with London College of Communication agreement

UXBRIDGE -- Maintaining its commitment to support the education of tomorrow's digital print professionals, Xerox, together with Electronics For Imaging (EFI), today announced a major initiative to supply the latest colour laser digital printing and related colour management technologies to the London College of Communication (LCC). Under the three-year agreement the LCC, formerly known as the London College of Printing, will take delivery of a Xerox DocuColor 250 complete with EFI Fiery® server, worth in excess of £85,000. The state-of-the-art colour multi-function system will enable the LCC's School of Printing and Publishing, which has 1,000 students, to develop new BA and MA degree courses and modules devoted to digital printing, document management, variable data and colour management. LCC director of enterprise within the School of Printing and Publishing, Professor Lindsay MacDonald, said the DocuColor 250, launched last June, represented a technological first for the college and would become a feature within its colour suite. "We don't have anything comparable to the Xerox machine, which perfectly complements our existing equipment. It's seen very much as the latest evolutionary step in digital colour printing. It has a high quality engine that can print onto a variety of substrates. The EFI server gives us the ability to print variable data, which makes it very interesting for those studying digital publishing and digital print document management," said MacDonald. The LCC, along with its four other sister colleges within the University of the Arts, London - Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, and the London College of Fashion - is involved in a range of programmes designed to share its knowledge with industry, as well as give its students business experience. LCC Dean of the School of Printing and Publishing, Sue Pandit, said that the DocuColor 250 would allow the college

Datagraphic improves security of documents with Xerox Nuvera MICR systems

UXBRIDGE -- Commercial security printer Datagraphic has announced a £400,000 investment in two Xerox Nuvera 144 MICR Digital Production Systems to significantly enhance the security of its printed documents. This is the first Xerox customer in the UK to use the newest MICR-equipped Xerox model after beta-testing the machine for more than a year. Designed for the printing of high security materials such as the numbers and symbols typically found at the bottom of cheques, the new MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) laser printer module on the Xerox Nuvera range uses special electromagnetic toner. When banks process cheques, the document is passed through a reader that magnetises the ink and translates the information into digital characters, ensuring that the digits (such as the sort number and account number) are verified. "We chose the Xerox Nuvera MICR model because it allows us to reach new markets and guarantee business growth in transactional print - which has increased by more than 30 per cent per year in the past three years," says Scotch Kirkpatrick, managing director at Datagraphic. "After a year of beta testing the equipment, we realised that the Nuvera could offer something unique to our customers. One of the key benefits is its ability to combine transactional documents with personalised marketing messages using techniques such as white space management combined with database mining. This solution is more cost-effective for our customers and adds significant value to the documents we produce, particularly the enhanced image quality at 4800dpi compared to the 600dpi we could previously achieve." Datagraphic is using its Xerox Nuvera 144 systems with Printsoft's PreS software, which enables personalised printing for variable data, including transactional printing of cheques and security documents such as vouchers, payroll and billing documents for major banks and financial services companies. The "near litho" print quality enables us t
